Whenever you add contacts with one or more missing variables to a sequence, they will be marked as failed within the sequence.

Consider this example. Let’s say that you have created a sequence with multiple contact variables such as {{firstname}}, {{company}}, and {{phone number}}.

You are now trying to add a contact, say the contact’s name is Smith. Smith has the first name and company name fields updated but not the phone number field.

When you add Smith to the sequence, the variables’ first name and company name will be replaced with their respective values. As there is no value mentioned in the phone number field, it will not be mapped. This is why Smith’s status will be marked as ‘failed’ in the sequence.

You have to update Smith’s phone number in the contacts section to activate him back in the respective sequence.

Here’s how you do it -

Ensure if all the contact variables used in the sequence are present in the uploaded contacts. If you find any missing contact variables, update those values and retry. The following steps will help you to get back on track -

  • Visit the ‘contacts’ section in the vertical navigation bar.

  • Click on ‘more options’ (the three dots) against the contact that you want to edit.

  • Choose edit.

  • Update the missing variables that led to the status “failed” and click on ‘update contact’.

  • Go back to the sequence that you are dealing with and go to contacts.

  • Click on ‘more options’ (the three dots) against the failed contact.

  • Click retry.

  • You will see the status of the contact being changed to ‘pending’. Now the sequence will resume as per your schedule.
